Wizards and Wands!
What an adventure!
We've recently started a new exploration of the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter & it's so wonderfully magical!

You're probably thinking we're a bit slow off the mark but no, it's not the first time we've explored Harry Potter, & it probably won't be the last - there is something truly inspiring & engaging about revisiting this whimsical world & it's colourful characters & every time we are drawn back to it, our exploration is different.
We first explored the world of Harry Potter when we were very new to Home Education & one of our older children was in about grade four - to focus really being on the literature side of things; now we have two pre-school aged children & a teenager & our exploration is very different - there are a lot more hands-on activities & we are much more game & art focused!

When going through our homeschooling resource collection (no easy task because as teachers we have collected quite a lot of resources, not to mention all of the fabulous ones we've explored or are on our to do list since starting Home Education) & we rediscovered a unit created by Jessica at The Waldock Way.
This got us thinking about Harry Potter again and so we sat down, and using this unit as a guide we started planning what wonderful wizarding adventures we would undertake this time!
So far we have only scratched the tip of the iceberg (and we haven't put a time limit on this exploration because that would just put pressure on and ruin all the fun, besides; in a place like Hogwarts you really can't ever truly know what lies ahead😉).

Recently, we started one of the most difficult puzzles we have ever attempted (it looked simple enough but we soon came to discover that with a lot of the background and border being the same colours - and possibly because our sorting skills leave much to be desired 😂 - it has in fact taken us a lot longer to get a good start than we'd hoped)!
Still, it is a fabulous opportunity for the whole family to work together and engage with each other, work with our hands, colour and pattern match, and connect with each other in conversations that might have otherwise never taken place in our busy lives - we are really enjoying the forced 'slowness' puzzles create.
Here are a few of the puzzles we love:
Wizarding World Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle (3D)
Although this puzzle only has 197 pieces it is super challenging, being three-dimensional. Not only is it a great challenge and something a little different, but you can use these 3D puzzles as décor, to create a diorama, or even for gentle pretend play. There are quite a few of these fabulous 3D puzzles out there, and a HUGE collection of Harry Potter themed ones including Hedwig the Owl, Gringott's Bank, The Burrow, Fawkes, Diagon Alley, and The Hogwarts Express to name a few!
Ravensburger Hogwarts Map
This puzzle has 1500 pieces so isn't for the faint of heart! This is, in fact, the first puzzle we chose to tackle and sorting the colours, finding the edge pieces and generally making pieces match up has been incredibly challenging... BUT... We are set to have an awesome map of the wonderful wizarding world of Harry Potter when we're finished and it is creating lots of opportunities to slow down, work on fine motor skills and patience!
Harry Potter Collector's Puzzle (Hogwarts Castle)
This puzzle is a mid-range puzzles with 550 pieces; but like all of the puzzles we've collected so far, is designed for older puzzle builders (our little ones like helping to sort the colours into our puzzle trays though!).
We feel like this puzzle rounded out our initial collection because it showcases Hogwarts Castle in all its splendour, imagine seeing this view for the very first time!
We also love the challenge that it poses being consistently dark shades and imagine it will take quite a few hours of picking through puzzle pieces to get it together.
