Game Review: Pizza, Pizza!

Writer's picture: MelMel

Pizza, Pizza! is a fast-paced, food-flinging shape and colour-matching game that will have everyone craving this tasty Italian favourite. This game gives children the opportunity to learn about, identify and match shapes and colours. The object of the game is to fill up your pizza base with tasty ingredients first.

Children use a dual-spinner to spin a colour and a shape, this gives them twice the opportunity to get a piece for their pizza. After identifying a pizza slice that matches either the shape or the colour spun, they can add this to their pizza – but be careful, if you pick up a slice that has a nasty critter on it, your slice is headed for the bin!

This game provides some extra elements that challenge children who are ready to move from simple one-step games. The dual-spinner adds an extra step into the game process that takes a little bit of practice to get the hang of and some gentle reminders might be needed. In addition, not only do you need to identify and match the shape and/or colour; you need to check your pizza base to make sure that you don’t already have a slice of that type – if you do, you must wait until your next turn to add a new slice!

This game provides lots of opportunity for conversation and laughter. Our Little Sprout loves pointing out the different food combinations on each slice and telling us about which ones she likes to eat on real pizza. The surprise of getting an icky critter on your pizza always causes a bout of giggles and speculation of what it might be like to have that creepy crawly on your plate! Pizza, Pizza! is a quick game and you can have a round or two in well under half an hour – leaving plenty of time to make a real pizza for lunch…yum!
