Poetry Books We Love!
We've just recently finished exploring this collection of Aussie poetry and thoroughly enjoyed it - there truly is something in there for everyone and it showcases the diversity of our landscape and our people beautifully. We particularly liked this collection because it offered some more complex, yet still extremely engaging poetry for older children too!
"In This Is Home, much-loved author Jackie French has gathered a poem for every child and every mood. What do you feel like doing today? Sit beside a bush campfire with Oodgeroo Noonuccal,, watch people going by with Henry Lawson, float away with Alison Lester, learn to read with Andy Griffiths or be brave with Shaun Tan.
Ideal for sharing with the whole family, this extensively illustrated edition brings together old favourites and sure-to-be new favourites in an indispensable addition to children’s bookshelves. From poems that whisper to poems that roar, from words of tranquility and heartbreak to those of the witty and absurd, there is something within these pages to make everyone feel at home." Anything Julia Donaldson is usually a winner for us, but the collection of poetry in 'Poems to Perform: A Classic Collection Chosen by the Children's Laureate' is outstanding and give plenty of scope for playing with poetry, that's for sure!
"In this collection, Julia Donaldson has chosen poems with performance by children in mind, and in the notes section at the end of the book are her notes and ideas on performing them.
Julia's passionate belief that performance can help children enjoy reading and grow in confidence is informed by her own experience both as a child and now, working with groups of children to bring stories, poems and songs to life.
The poems range from classics by Edward Lear, W H Auden and Eleanor Farjeon to contemporary work by Michael Rosen, John Agard and Clare Bevan. Illustrated throughout with exquisite, expressive lino-cuts, this is a book for teachers, parents, children: anyone who loves great poetry." (Publisher's Synopsis)
We couldn't go past this delightful collection of all things prehistoric;'In the Past: From Trilobites to Dinosaurs to Mammoths in More Than 500 Million Years' - with our current obsession for all things prehistoric - this collection of poems was a no-brainer for us!
"Return to the prehistoric era and discover a host of creatures both novel and familiar, from the mysterious trilobite to the famed T. rex.
Care to meet a dunkleosteus? An apatosaurus? How about the dragonflyesque meganaura?
In a collection that’s organized chronologically by epoch and is sure to intrigue everyone from armchair dino enthusiasts to budding paleontologists, David Elliott and Matthew Trueman illuminate some of the most fascinating creatures ever to evolve on the earth.
Combining poems both enlightening and artful with illustrations perfect for poring over, this volume ensures fascinating trips back to a time as enthralling and variable as any in our planet’s evolutionary history." (Publisher's Synopsis)
